Yoga of Sound Training Certification Course

Dr. John Beaulieu N.D., Ph.D. and Thea Keats Beaulieu
January 25 - 31, 2009

Course Details

In the Yoga of Sound Training you will discover the importance of sound in yoga tradition and learn different methods to integrate sound and healing. When yoga traditions are united with modern science the result is an accountable approach for using sound in the healing arts and a greater understanding of the use of sound in yoga practices. Yoga of Sound Training integrates Cymatics, the science of wave phenomena, molecular research, and yoga philosophy into a practical and effective approach for working with sound.

The training begins with teachings on the universality of vibration and how to perceive ourselves as beings of sound through the practice of special methods of observation and evaluation. Special emphasis is given to understanding and perceiving the universal movement of sound and rhythm in all aspects of life, and developing the skills to evaluate these movements into quantifiable behaviors. These behavioral categories were given the names Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth in yoga philosophy and were used as the basis for the application of sound, music, visualization, movement, and dance in healing and yoga practices. Students will learn how to evaluate and work with the five elements for healing and increased well-being in all aspects of life. Specific methods are taught to tune the nervous system and balance the five elements. These include the use of BioSonic tuning forks, toning, five element voice, movement and music analysis, visualization, and the art of mantra. Special emphasis will be given to the effect of "OM-ing" and other uses of sound in yoga classes.

The material presented emphasizes the relationship between the healing arts and the practice of yoga. Sound and yoga teachings can be integrated into the practices of medicine, nursing, massage, acupuncture, energy healing modalities, psychotherapy, osteopathic and chiropractic medicine. Understanding the relationship between sound and yoga empowers the practice and teaching of yoga. If you have ever wondered about sound and music and how it effects yourself and others or if you want to learn how to use sound to help yourself and others --- then this course is for you.

BioSonic Repatterning™ training is world recognized and represents the highest training standards in the field of Sound Healing.Certificates recognised worldwide will be available for all graduates of the course. Please see www.biosonics.com for more information.

A cohort format -a group of regular students interested to engage in in-depth learning & practice of raga singing and voice fine tuning.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The ragas are the most important link to the essence of Indian classical music. The appreciation and experience of the raga becomes profoundly meaningful to spiritual seekers as well as to the trained musician. The word “rag” is derived from the Sanskrit “raga” which means “color,” or “passion.” Ragas, therefore, may be thought of as an acoustic method of coloring the mind of the listener with an emotion. Ragas are not just musical scales or modes, they are described by master musicians as divinely inspired melodic entities.

This class focuses on the main characteristics of several ragas by cultivating familiarity with the pitches and tonal movement of the alap or their introductory melodic phrases. We will discover the beauty of the shrutis (micro-tones that are revealed in the space between the notes), and the transformational power of the rasas (a rasa is that which gives “taste” to the mind), which relates to aesthetic sentiments such as love, joy, devotion, wonder, heroism, peace, and detachment evoked by the rendering of the ragas.

We will experience raga-based styles of devotional chanting: Dhrupad singing, Saregam, Khyal and Kirtan. Students will be able to appreciate different ragas, create a vocal practice, learn about vocal technique, and get acquainted with various modalities of music healing applications informed by devotional chanting. Ragas are the greatest music teachers, because through the traditional practice of call and response, these awakening melodies stimulate our memory, while refining our senses deeply and delightfully.

Into The Core of The Raga & Rasa System,
we explore the architecture of music and emotions,
unfolding the art melodic movement,
and deepening the experience of MANTRA HEALING

Ragas are not just scales, ragas are inspiring melodies that have the power to refine your voice quality, balancing our nervous system, shifting our emotions, and transform consciousness
immediately, deeply and delightfully. Ragas are "alive", have no history since they are renewed each time they are performed, becoming the best music teachers.

The raga is the most important concept that any student of Indian or Western music should understand to seep listening, improvise & compose music. The Hindi/Urdu word "rag" is derived from the Sanskrit "raga" which means "colour, or passion". It is linked to the Sanskrit word "ranj" which means "to colour" (Apte 1987). Therefore rag may be thought of as an acoustic method of colouring the mind of the listener with an emotion. Musically, ragas are melodic arrangements. Their origins is ancient and sacred, they were composed by celestial beings and channeled by Indian Masters and lineages of musicianship through oral transmission. There are 75.000 ragas and they developed through a modal structure. The slow development of the melody is the heart of this music. The haunting melodies an the microtonal intervalic logic are regarded as the “color of the mind” , being the result of tonal arrangements ruled by cosmological and aesthetic laws related with dimensions of light ( i.e.: night and day ). A raga is complete when it achieves its tonal taste or “rasa” which is another element in classical Indian music.

Rasa is perceived as a sentiment, which could be described as an aesthetic experience. Although rasa is unique, in practice we distinguish several “savors” according to the emotion which colors it : erotic love, pathetic, devotional, comic, fearful, repugnant, horrific, heroic, fantastic, furious, peaceful. The individual feels immersed in that mood to the exclusion of all else including himself. Thus, aesthetic experience is a transformation of not merely feeling, but equally of cognition, “ a condensed understanding in the mode of ecstasy “; the ecstasy of the intellect, an ecstasy itself inscrutable and illuminating. In the Vedas the experience of rasa is described as a flash of super-worldly blinding light, which appears to whom the knowledge of ideal beauty is innate and intuitive. It is an experience impossible to analyze.

We will explore the meaning of rasa through images of taste, relish, essence, something like the nectar of the fruit, the best or finest part of it. It is like perfume, which comes from matter but it is not easy to describe or comprehend, since has non-physical properties, often yielding pleasure. In its subtlest sense, rasa comes to signify a state of heightened delight, the kind of bliss that can be experienced only by the spirit ( “ananda”). It is a pure delight that only the presence of a work of art can make as feel. It is perceived as an emotional pleasure, which Hindus refer to as the “taste of the mind”, or the delight of reason, an inspiring energy which is experienced by sharing a feeling and suddenly understanding the essence of a work of art. Therefore, rasa describes a state of enhanced emotional perception produced by the presence of musical energy and is applicable to all creative expression, being particularly powerful in the art of healing with sound and music.

INFORMATION SESSION:

June 11
7 to 9 pm

CIIS, 1453 Mission Street

ABOUT THE CERTIFICATE
Led by Silvia Nakkach and leading experts in the field of sound healing, this 200-hour certificate program offers an extensive study of sound, music, and chanting to support therapeutic and growth processes. The program integrates theory and practice in a comprehensive curriculum built upon both scientific research and spiritual wisdom traditions. Students gain a solid foundation in sound healing and experience firsthand sound’s tremendous potential for personal transformation and spiritual awakening.

FOR MORE INFORMATION
Visit http://www.ciis.edu/publicprograms/sound/
Phone: 415.575.6175

WHO SHOULD APPLY
No previous experience in sound healing is necessary. The Certificate is designed for anyone who has a strong interest in learning about the transformative powers of sound, including health care professionals, psychologists, clinicians, educators, musicians, singers, sound healers, music therapists, yoga practitioners, body workers, and spiritual seekers.

HERE’S WHAT A 2006 CIIS GRADUATE AND A STAFF MEMBER HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE VALUE OF LEARNING SOUND HEALING AND ABOUT SILVIA NAKKACH, THE SOUND CERTIFICATE CREATOR & COORDINATOR:

My own experience over many years as a yoga practitioner and teacher, as well as a Vedic chanting and Carnatic music student, has led me to seek out teachers and guides who really understand the field of sound therapy as practitioners as well as scholars. Silvia (Nakkach) is a leader in the world of healing with the voice, and is able to transmit her knowledge on multiple levels. Every class I was fortunate enough to participate in with her was filled with laughter, sweetness, and a deep sense of connection to the source of sound. She is a pioneer in her ability to incorporate various traditions, and really express the heart and core of each one with great integrity, wisdom, and a sense of playfulness. Most importantly, she has an incredible ability to connect with each student and to bring out his or her highest potential as a healer.”

Jake Pollack, 2006 Graduate, MA, Integrative Health Studies

"I am thrilled about the new sound healing certificate program. As a hypnotherapist and past student of Silvia Nakkach, I’ve learned how to use sound as a container for clients’ healing and how sound carries the client deeper and more inward or from one state of awareness to another. Personally, sound healing has been libratory as it has helped me to move out of the mind’s habits and perceptions during the highs and lows of my life. The primary realizations I have had about how sound can function in community, in the client-therapist relationship, and individually have been priceless. I'm excited about what else I will learn".

Angie Choi, Student and Faculty Services Manager
School of Consciousness and Transformation

Silvia Nakkach and the Yoga of the Voice
at Sivananda Yoga Farm
with Swami SitaRamananda

Yoga of Voice
06/26/09 to 06/28/09
Taught by Sylvia Nakkach

Just as activation of subtle psychic centers of the body can lead to an experience of transcendence, the contagious bliss of devotional chanting generates a sensation of boundless radiance and openness—nurturing the intense yearning of the heart to unite with the divine, liberating energy, and providing us with the opportunity to alter unwanted feelings and to restore vitality instantaneously. Embark on a beguiling sound journey as Ms. Nakkach introduces shakti practices for sound and vocal improvisation to pacify the mind, balance the body, and transform consciousness. These practices, based on Nada-Yoga, Tibetan incantations, magic mantras, shamanic songs from Native American, Afro-Brazilian and Amazon traditions, Indian ragas and vocal meditation exercises, can be applied to sound healing modalities, yoga practice, chanting circles, and psycho-spiritual growth. The voice wanders through an ocean of trancelike empowering sounds, creating optimum coordination between left and right brain hemispheres that results in decreased muscle tension, lower blood pressure and improved circulation. As the voice puts the body at ease, we enjoy relief from stress, emotional harmony, increased mental acuity, and enhanced creativity, fostering progressive resonance with the path of the shamans, the artists, the children, and the yogis.

The Mysticism of Sound
and Musical Mindfulness

Silvia Nakkach

Saturday and Sunday
October 11 - 12
10am–5:30pm

CIIS Main Building

REGISTRATION through CIIS

Join composer and vocalist Silvia Nakkach on a journey through the transformative power of music, and experience firsthand ancient and contemporary sound tools as a healing modality. Since time immemorial, sound has been used as a gateway to transcendence and the exploration of consciousness by shamans, yogis, mystics, artists, and scientists. Sound expresses the relationship between human and cosmic orders, and it can deepen our experience of sacredness and love.

This course offers a comprehensive and systematic understanding of how sound underlies our most fundamental existence, and how music and intention can be used to assist psychospiritual insight and transformation. The coursework integrates the power of mantra to transcend the mind’s limitations. Participants also explore spiritual healing with sound, involving instruction in the music of the Sama Veda, Sufi teachings, Indian ragas, and Rudolph Steiner’s studies on the etheric tone. Through chanting and awareness practices, participants gain knowledge of how sound can induce ecstatic states of consciousness as it enhances ritual, shamanic journeys, and meditation.

Silvia Nakkach,MA, MMT, is an award-winning composer, a former therapist in Argentina, and pioneer in the field of sound and transformation of consciousness. She is the founding director of Vox Mundi School of the Voice, which is dedicated to teaching and preserving sacred musical traditions. Alchemical Divination and Yogic Chant
Conducted by
Ralph Metzner, Ph.D., and Silvia Nakkach, M.A.

Silvia & Ralph at Ions dinner, photo by Sergio Lub

Alchemy, akin to shamanism and yoga, is the ancient art and science of elemental transformation – at physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Divination is a structured inquiry to access inner knowledge of the past, for healing and problem solving; and of the future, for visioning and guidance. We work in the spirit of the Roman deity Janus, god of doorways and passageways, whose two faces are turned to the past and the (probable) futures. We use concentrative light-fire meditation, supported by sounding and toning, to raise consciousness beyond the usual timespace framework and facilitate the integration of the insights received.

As part of the sacred sound experience of this workshop, we explore Indigenous shamanic traditions that use rhythms to induce altered state trance journeys, and 'spirit songs' for healing, as in Amazonian medicine ceremonies, and Yogic traditions that use mantras or sacred seed syllables (like OM) to bring about one-pointed concentration and deep inner states of absorption. As we delve into the transformative qualities of devotional chant, we learn about Nada Yoga (seed sounds), Shabda Yoga (mantra), Bhava Yoga (raga), Tibetan Tantric chant, and other practices of consciousness transformation, healing, and divination, facilitated by sound.

Ralph Metzner, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist, workshop leader, and professor at CIIS who has been involved in the study of consciousness and transformational practices (including psychoactive plants and substances, shamanic journeys, toning and chanting, and light-fire yogic meditations) for more than 40 years. His books include Teonanácatl, The Unfolding Self, and Green Psychology.
For more Information on Alchemical Divination visit: http://www.greenearthfound.org

The Metzner Alchemical Divination practices have been developed by Ralph Metzner on the basis of extensive experiential research on altered states of consciousness. These practices have been applied and tested over the past twenty years in the contexts of psychological work with individuals and groups. This is the first time they are being taught for those wishing to learn to use them with others as well as themselves.

Divination is practiced in many traditions and is generally recognized as a process of obtaining intuitive spiritual insight. In essence, it involves a structured inquiry into questions of the past, for healing and resolving problems, or the future, for visioning and obtaining guidance. Alchemy is the ancient art and science of elemental transformation, which in modern times was re-interpreted by C.G. Jung and his followers as psychospiritual transformation using symbolic or imaginal processes. Combining these two ancient traditions with a unique blend of contemporary depth psychology and shamanistic spirituality --

The Metzner Alchemical Divination practices are rooted in:
• the transformational teachings of psychospiritual alchemy
• core East-West teachings of humans as multi-dimensional Beings of Light
• shamanistic principles and practices of connecting with the spirits of nature
• a scientific systems worldview describing the interconnected Web of Life

The basic purpose of these divinations is to help individuals obtain deeper experiential understanding, problem resolution and visionary inspiration for their life path in its intrapsychic, interpersonal, professional, creative and spiritual dimensions.

We are all born with the innate ability to sing, to dance, and to live a celebratory creative lifestyle. Music is one of the most natural ways through which we can heal and celebrate our spirit. Singing, chanting, drumming, and playing the piano or any instrument allows us to nurture a loving relationship with ourselves through music.

This workshop provides a humorous and energetic environment for practicing exercises that will deepen our relationship with our own natural musical self. Through improvisational techniques and musical gestures from the music of India, Brazil, Africa, and the West, students discover how distant worlds of music complement and complete each other, engaging in optimally balanced left and right brain activity.

This all-levels workshop is designed to help you develop confidence through creating a positive musical experience and cultivating a balanced approach to a long-term musical journey.

David Darling, cellist, composer, and educator, has been opening hearts to the mystery of sound for four decades. He is celebrated for his energetic, loving, and accepting style in emancipating the musical soul in those he teaches. He has produced numerous recordings, as well as released eight solo albums and more than three dozen collaborative efforts with such diverse artists as Paul Winter and Jan Garbarek.

Silvia Nakkach, MA, MMT, is an award-winning composer and pioneer in the field of sound and transformation of consciousness. She is the founding director of Vox Mundi School of the Voice and a teacher and the academic advisor for the Sound, Voice and Music Healing Certificate at CIIS.

Medicine Melodies: The Music That Healers Hear
Silvia Nakkach & Val Serrant

Val Serrant

In the Universe, everything sings: plants, animals, waterfalls, bones, people, the stars, the rain, and many things we do not see; even silence makes a sound. The shaman hears the hidden music of the Universe and sings it back through “medicine melodies,” simple tonal configurations that reflect a sacred unity with nature and have the power to heal body, mind, and spirit. Many people in our own culture today are visited by such melodies—as if spontaneous transmissions from nature or the spirit world are “singing in” to the person rather than the person “singing out.”

Medicine melodies can be found in all traditions: from lullabies to Hebrew davennen; the kirtans, mantras, and ragas from India; Tibetan ritual prayers; the zhikrs of the Sufis; Buddhist sutras and tantric chants; and indigenous songs from Africa and the Americas. In this workshop, we will take a musical journey through songs from many of these cultures, exploring how spiritual melodicism and timeless rhythms make potent medicine. We will listen to healing melodies within the music of the classical Western repertoire from Mozart, Mahler, and Bach. And, we will experience the emotional magic that comes from singing the Icaros of the Peruvian Amazon Basin and other shamanic traditions, feeling how this music clears and opens energetic channels, gives birth to kindness, and connects us with love.

This day-long workshop is for anyone who longs to work more knowingly with music and the voice. You will bring home a repertoire of medicine melodies, as well as practical guidance for developing your practice of “singing in.” Bring an instrument if you have one, and a journal.

THE FACULTY:

" I met Mayumi in 1986 in an memorable artist retreat with Thich Nhat Hanh in Southern California. Lately, we have been collaborating as teachers of the annual Wild and Wise Women Retreat at Spirit Rock. We both share the belief that artistic expression is not only the property of artists, but is owned by everyone. When we still the inner voices that inhibit creativity, artist expression is spontaneously liberated, and the imagination is inspired, In the experience of openness, clarity and emptiness, drawing and chanting, become un-interrupted expression, inner awareness, happiness and compassion are heightened, becoming the basic software for daily enlightenment. This retreat offers the opportunity to empower your confidence and devotional self, by deepening the connection between creative expression, grace and spiritual practice.”
Silvia Nakkach

Enchanting into Divine Resonance

Engage in a journey into the healing power of sound and the magic of devotional chant as Silvia shares with us her original style of kirtan with chants that evoke abundant and radiant deities from many worlds, and a “taste” of the delights of the Yoga of the Voice, Silvia internationally renowned program informed by the shamanic and yogic traditions that use invocations and "spirit songs", mantras, and sacred syllables to bring about deep states of absorption, joy, and spiritual revelations.

By remembering the devotional nature of music and sounding we open our hearts to the deep longing of "the enchanters", those who journey through the magic of sound to attract the spirit power.
